Toyota unveiled two new forthcoming EVs today at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. The bZ3C and bZ3X should begin sales within the next year.
If you thought the bZ3 name sounded familiar you would be right. The bZ3 started life as a sedan with a powertrain jointly developed between BYD and Toyota. It seems that the name is now given over to a new line, all with jointly developed powertrains.
The bZ3C is the production version of the bZ Sport Crossover Concept shown at last year’s Shanghai Auto Show. Remarkably little appears to have changed bar the side view cameras being swapped for more conventional mirrors and the lower lip at the front having a much less sharp angle. The front face has linked C shaped light clusters and the design of the bumper is very similar to the new Prius.
It is a crossover and is like an electrified C-HR. Notably the car has Lidar and concealed door handles. Low drag wheels and a smooth tail line add to the youthful look. At the back is a quite prominent spoiler lip and brake lights sweep across the tailgate.
Inside the display car has a racy red interior. There’s a floating center console and infotainment screen. Notably the instrument panel seems set back very far down the dashboard toward the windshield. The bZ3C will be produced by FAW Toyota and will likely go on sale in the second half of the year.
GAC Toyota on the other hand gets the bZ3X which less obviously derives from last year’s bZ FlexSpace Concept. The design seems more reserved than the bZ3C and it has the lights split between what seem to be running lights across the front and lower mounted headlights. Also the car had a Lidar mounted at the top of the windshield.
Like its sibling the bZ3X gets a two tone body design with everything above the window line blacked out. Inside the car has a floating center screen and a small instrument display. The overall look is more subdued than with the bZ3C although that might equally mean it is closer to production. Artwork for the car shows a large panoramic roof.
Toyota didn’t make any announcement about the powertrain. However, we can presume that powering them are blade batteries from BYD subsidiary FinDreams.
