In the fourth week of October, week 43, China’s EV market was mostly up, with several exceptions. Xiaomi grew 1.79%, BYD grew 6.70%, Nio grew 7.69%, and Tesla was down 20.45% compared with the previous week.
Week 43 of 2024 was between October 21 and 27. Week 43 of 2023, used for year-on-year comparison, was between October 23 and 29.
The weekly sales are published by Li Auto, and despite Li’s not explicitly saying it, they are based on insurance registration data. The numbers are rounded and present new energy vehicles (NEV) sales, the Chinese term for BEVs, PHEVs, and EREVs (range extenders). To be completely precise, it also includes hydrogen vehicles (FCEVs), but their sales are almost non-existent in China.
BYD registered 95,600 vehicles, marking a 6.70% increase from the previous week’s 89,600 registrations. Year-over-year, BYD’s registrations surged by 84.56%, up from 51,800 units. Cumulatively, for October, BYD has registered 359,000 vehicles in China. This includes Monday, September 30.
Li Auto recorded 11,300 registrations, a 6.61% decrease from the 12,100 units registered the previous week. However, year-over-year, Li Auto’s registrations grew by 13.00%, up from 10,000 units. October’s total China registrations have reached 45,500.
Tesla saw 10,500 registrations, down 20.45% from 13,200 units the previous week. Year-over-year, Tesla’s registrations dropped slightly by 2.78% from 10,800 units. The cumulative October registrations stand at 34,000.
Aito maintained steady numbers with 8,700 registrations, the same as the previous week. Year-over-year data is unavailable for comparison. Aito’s total registrations for October are at 29,100 units.
Stellantis-backed Leapmotor registered 8,500 vehicles, a 6.25% increase from the previous week’s 8,000 units. Year-over-year, Leapmotor’s registrations grew by an impressive 112.50%, up from 4,000 units. October’s cumulative registrations are at 28,700.
GAC Aion registered 6,600 vehicles, a 4.76% increase from 6,300 units the previous week. However, year-over-year, registrations declined by 29.79% from 9,400 units.
Xiaomi reported 5,700 registrations, a slight increase of 1.79% from the previous week’s 5,600 units. Xiaomi’s total registrations for October have reached 19,700.
Volkswagen-backed Xpeng saw a notable increase with 5,600 registrations, a 24.44% rise from the previous week’s 4,500 units. Year-over-year, Xpeng’s registrations decreased slightly by 3.45% from 5,800 units. October’s cumulative registrations stand at 16,800.
Zeekr registered 5,100 vehicles, a slight decrease of 1.92% from the previous week’s 5,200 units. Year-over-year, Zeekr’s registrations rose significantly by 121.74%, up from 2,300 units. October’s total is now 19,500.
Deepal recorded 5,000 registrations, a 21.95% increase from 4,100 units in the previous week. Total October registrations for Deepal stand at 16,400.
Nio registered 4,200 vehicles, a 7.69% increase from the previous week’s 3,900 units. Year-over-year, Nio’s registrations declined by 8.70% from 4,600 units. October’s cumulative registrations are at 17,300.
Nio registration numbers are only for the Nio brand and don’t include Onvo. Onvo registered 1,200 units of its L60 SUV, up 28.6% from 933 units the week before, according to China EV DataTracker.

VW is not even among the top 10 EV companies in china. Just looking at the insurance registration numbers prove that. It’s even behind the startups like Nio, LeapMotors, Zeekr and Xiaomi.
Why are you so worked up about VW in China? EU started the tariff war with China so why care about whether German cars sell or not over there. It’s difficult to comprehend.
Hi Christian! Only top 10 NEV startups and top 10 NEV sales of major automakers are shared by Li Auto. Volkswagen is not in neither of them. They used to be from time time in the past, but recently their sales are too low to make it to the leaderboard, so we don’t know the actual weekly numbers for VW.

Where is Geely?
So the thing with Geely is it is never clear if it contains only Galaxy series or also some other stuff from Geely Auto. For sure it doens’t include Zeekr, Lynk Co etc., which are under Geely Group, but it has some other minor series. Will give it more time and try to include it properly next time. Thanks!
