Price of the Tesla Model S Performance in China will start at 1.2 million yuan or 198.000 USD. Price in the United States starts at 94.570 USD (without tax credit or incentives). The Tesla Model S is not liable for any green car subsidies which only apply for China-made automobiles. Sales of the Model S will officially start in June. Tesla will use the Chinese name Tesila (特斯拉).
The huge price difference is partly caused by import taxes and partly by the urge to earn extra money. Tesla currently has only one dealer in China, in the capital Beijing. Tesla is planning a second dealer in Shanghai but isn’t moving into any other cities yet. Earlier this month Tesla announced a plan to build a super charger network on roads from Beijing to Shanghai but no timetable was given.
The launch of the Model S on the Chinese car market has been delayed several times due to problems with the Chinese name and with finding the right import channels. All seems done now but the high price and lack of dealers will make sure the Model S will be a rarity on Chinese roads for a long time coming.
Assuming that the green car subsidies would be applicable to the Tesla Model S in China, how much in USD would that equate to?
Our TESLARATI.com contacts in Beijing have indicated to us that adoption of electric vehicles and the Tesla brand across Beijing and Shanghai have really picked up over the last two quarters which is great to hear!
my good the difference is huge
Finally a photo of the Tesla that’s not on fire for a change!
Welcome to China “Tesla”
🙂
Tesla plans to build a China assembly plant, so the cars will soon be made in China and avoid the extra high import taxes.
I’ve seen it reported elsewhere that a FULLY LOADED P85 TAX INCLUDED will cost $180,000 in China, which compares to about $125,000 in the U.S. with tax included.
Now that’s based on some outside help with Chinese translation, so take with a grain of salt, but the numbers reported in this story may well be too high.
FWIW, Tesla has unequivocally stated that they will not price their cars to profit more in one region of the world than another… differences in pricing will soley be due to taxes, duties and shipping costs.
the official information about the price is that it will start from 121.000 USD that means about 750.000 RMB.
