The Avatr 07 has made a notable entrance into the automotive market in China. After 20 hours of its official launch, Avatr has received 11,673 lock-in orders for the new 07 SUV. It is available in both BEV and EREV variants. Our test car is the Avatr 07 Ultra range-extended (EREV) version with AWD priced at 279,900 yuan (39,920 USD). The vehicle is a versatile mid-size SUV with advanced technology and innovative design. After spending some time behind the wheel, it became clear that this model offers more than just eye-catching aesthetics—it delivers a well-rounded driving experience with attention to performance and comfort.

Exterior Design

The Avatr 07 strikes a delicate balance between practicality and style, distinguishing itself from its Avatr 11 (see specs) and 12 (see specs) siblings. One of the key design enhancements is the slightly flatter roofline, which improves the vehicle’s sleek profile and increases rear cargo capacity, making it more suitable for carrying larger loads of luggage or equipment.

The vehicle offers ample interior space while maintaining a balanced, streamlined exterior, measuring 4825 mm in length, 1980 mm in width, and 1620 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2940 mm. The front of the Avatr 07 continues with its family design, incorporating distinctive double-layered LED daytime running lights.

The vehicle’s rear shifts towards a more traditional SUV style, though it introduces a smaller rear window, maintaining a sleek and modern appearance. The narrow taillights, carefully integrated into the design, provide high visibility while adding to the vehicle’s overall aesthetic appeal. This combination of thoughtful design elements makes the Avatr 07 eye-catching and highly functional.

The Interior

Like the Avatr 12 fastback, the front cabin of the Avatr 07 features a dual-screen setup. The system is intuitive and user-friendly, delivering a clean interface that’s easy to navigate. The cockpit is uncluttered. The large 15.6-inch central control screen is a focal point, offering driver and passenger access to vehicle controls and infotainment. A 35.4-inch 4K display provides entertainment options for rear-seat passengers, while the optional digital side mirrors are available.

The interior is well-appointed, with high-quality materials and a thoughtful layout. The cabin’s modern design is enhanced by the zero-gravity seats, which provide excellent support on long trips. The 25-speaker Meridian Audio sound system adds a touch of luxury, immersing passengers in quality audio.

The rear-side seats offer ample room, providing passengers a comfortable and spacious environment. The comfortable seating angle and cushioning will make long journeys feel less tiring. However, it is less comfortable for the rear-center passenger.

Storage

The cargo area is spacious, with 500 liters of storage behind the rear seats, expandable to 1,325 liters with the seats folded down.

Hidden compartments under the rear cargo floor offer an extra 60 liters of storage.

Driving Experience

Our Avatr 07 features a two-motor four-wheel-drive configuration. The range-extended version is equipped with the Kunlun range extender system, which has a 1.5T range extender with a maximum power output of 115 kW. The EREV’s four-wheel-drive version offers a 231 kW rear motor and a 131 kW front motor for enhanced power and traction.

It performed well on highways and city roads, with the electric powertrain delivering smooth acceleration and quiet operation for a serene driving experience. The car performed well in slow city driving and faster highway speeds. Additionally, the electric version features an active grille to improve aerodynamics, further enhancing efficiency at higher speeds.

The air suspension system adapts its stiffness based on driving conditions, ensuring a smoother highway experience while tightening for better control on winding roads. On mountainous terrain, the 4WD model excelled with precise cornering and stable handling, making it an excellent choice for those prioritizing performance and agility.

The vehicle strikes a good balance between providing ample interior space and remaining maneuverable on the road. The 21-inch wheels offer good handling on rougher surfaces. Steering was precise, yet it lacked communication with the road.

Autonomous Driving – Huawei Qiankun ADS 3.0

The Avatr 07 features advanced autonomous driving capabilities powered by Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 3.0 system, which performs effectively during city driving in Zhuhai. This system can navigate without requiring detailed maps and is particularly suited for urban areas with frequently changing traffic and road layouts. During our test, in addition to making U-turns at traffic lights (as we tested on the ADS 2.0), the system continually adjusted the steering wheel to adapt to the road conditions. When the car in front travels too slowly, the ADS 3.0 will automatically indicate and change lanes on its own to overtake the slow-moving vehicle.

While still in early development, ADS 3.0 successfully managed tasks such as lane changes and stop-and-go traffic, enhancing convenience in congested settings. As technology advances, it has the potential to become a significant selling point for the Avatr 07, providing drivers with a more hands-off driving experience.

Safety Features

The Avatr 07 includes various safety features to enhance driver and passenger security. Key highlights are Huawei’s next-generation LiDAR technology, which improves the vehicle’s detection capabilities, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking. The car has multiple airbags for occupant protection, a high-strength body structure for improved crash safety, and a 360-degree camera system for parking and maneuvering. Additionally, blind spot monitoring helps detect vehicles in adjacent lanes, reducing the risk of accidents during lane changes.

Conclusion

Overall, the Avatr 07 is an impressive mid-size SUV that combines innovative technology with a focus on comfort and practicality. The choice between BEV and EREV versions allows buyers to tailor the vehicle to their driving preferences. With its advanced autonomous driving system, range-extending technology, and thoughtful interior design, the Avatr 07 is well-positioned to compete in the evolving electric SUV market with new competition from Onvo L60 (see specs) and the Zeekr 7X (see specs). The Avatr 07 delivers a strong balance between innovation and everyday usability for those seeking a versatile, tech-forward vehicle.
