Once upon a time in the not so distant past various Haima and FAW cars were based on Mazda platforms. Fast forward to 2024 and the new Mazda EZ-6 not only rides on the Changan EPA electric hybrid platform but is also largely a Mazda-fied version of the Deepal SL03. Thanks to the kind people at a government ministry we now know a whole lot more about the new car which should go on sale within the next few months in both all electric and range extended EV forms.

Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) listing information covered three versions of the EZ-6, two of them all electric and the other the EREV version. All versions measure in with the same 4921, 1890 and 1485 mm (l/w/h) while riding on a wheelbase of 2895 mm. Notably although the width is exactly the same as the current SL03 both the length and height are larger (4820 and 1480 for the SL03) while the Mazda wheelbase is actually 5 mm less than the Deepal. Notably the length is similar to the new Deepal L07 (4875 mm) which was also listed at the same time and is apparently a new model rather than a lengthened replacement of the SL03, despite looking very similar.

All three listed variants of the Mazda EZ-6 have a top speed of 170 km/h. Weights for the two all-electric versions are 1855 and 1962 kg respectively while the EREV come in at either 1820 or 1862 kg depending on configuration. Currently the car is only available with 19-inch wheels.

There is a slight difference in look at the front between the EV and EREV versions with the EV having a closed grille whereas the EREV has a hollow design. Overall the design is in keeping with the look of current Mazda models. At the back is a through light design which links larger clusters at the edges

Interestingly the EREV uses the same JL473QJ engine from Changan as the Deepal SL03 rather than swapping out the range-extender for a Mazda engine. This has peak power of 70 kW but the car is actually driven by a 160 kW electric motor mounted on the rear axle. This is the less powerful motor as used by older EREV versions of the SL03 rather than the 175 kW motor on 2024 versions. All-electric versions get a MSED04 electric motor on the rear axle which according to MIIT is produced by the Changan Mazda Engine Company Limited and has a peak power of 190 kW. Battery capacities have yet to be announced but we know that all will use lithium iron phosphate units with those for the EV version being supplied by CATL.

While the MIIT information shows us that the Mazda EZ-6 has more individual character in terms of size it seems to differ less than we expected in terms of powertrain. We also know from last month’s Beijing Auto Show that the basic configuration of the interior won’t be majorly different with a 14.6-inch floating center screen, an LCD instrument panel along with flat bottomed steering wheel. The Mazda EZ-6 also has a Sony sound system, and a zero-gravity seat for the front passenger. Powering the cockpit is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip with most functions controlled either through the screen or voice commands.
