BYD has launched the Sealion 05 DM-i, a compact SUV equipped with the 5th-generation DM plug-in hybrid system. It comes in four variants, priced between 112,800 to 142,800 yuan (15,980 to 20,230 USD). As a sister model to the Song Pro DM-i, the Sealion 05 DM-i will be sold under BYD’s Ocean Network, while the Song Pro DM-i will be offered through the Dynasty Network. The two models target the compact SUV segment, emphasizing fuel efficiency and practicality.
The Sealion 05 DM-i features BYD’s 5th-generation DM hybrid system, combining a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine with a maximum power output of 74 kW (99 hp) and an electric motor producing 120 kW (160 hp). It offers two lithium iron phosphate blade battery options: 12.9 kWh and 18.3 kWh, providing pure electric ranges of 75 km and 115 km under the CLTC cycle.
Regarding fuel efficiency, the Sealion 05 DM-i achieves low consumption figures, with a minimum of 3.79 L/100 km in a low battery state according to the NEDC standard. In the WLTC cycle, fuel consumption ranges from 4.85 L/100 km to 4.9 L/100 km. The powertrain is paired with an E-CVT transmission for smooth acceleration. It has a combined range of up to 1,400 km. Additionally, the vehicle supports a 3.3 kW external power output, allowing it to power devices during outdoor activities or emergencies.
The Sealion 05 DM-i follows BYD’s “Ocean Aesthetics” design language, featuring a wide front grille with chrome accents and sharp headlights. The front bumper has an integrated air intake, contributing to the car’s functional and streamlined appearance. The floating roof design and five-spoke black-and-silver wheels add to the overall look. At the rear, the full-width taillight strip is a key visual element. The car’s dimensions are 4710 mm long, 1880 mm wide, and 1720 mm tall, placing it within the mid-size SUV category.
Inside, the Sealion 05 DM-i has a fully digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch rotatable touchscreen running BYD’s DiLink infotainment system. The gear shifter and physical buttons in the center console control various functions, such as drive mode and climate settings. The vehicle includes wireless charging, USB ports, and NFC smartphone key access.
The driver’s seat and the front passenger seat offer electric adjustment, with the driver’s seat supporting 8-way adjustments. The cabin features orange and blue stitching and includes a panoramic sunroof. With the rear seats folded, the cargo space offers 407 liters and 1,430 liters when the rear seats are folded down.
The Sealion 05 DM-i will compete with models like the Geely Galaxy L7 (see specs) and Jetour Shanhai L6. Its focus on fuel efficiency aligns it with consumer demand for lower running costs and environmental impact in the compact SUV segment. The Sealion 05 DM-i presents itself as a practical option in its category by offering the latest hybrid system and modern tech features.
