Spy shots have emerged of a new Chery NEV believed to carry the internal code name T1GC. That code has also previously been associated with the first model of a new Chery brand reportedly called Yueji (越己) in Chinese.

Very little is known about the new model. However, from the spy shots, Chinese media are speculating that the car is actually related to the Omoda 7. This is currently an export-only model under Chery’s Omoda brand, which is positioned more upmarket than the mainstream brand.

The Omoda 7 is a mid-sized SUV which measures in at 4,621, 1,872 and 1,673 mm (l/w/h), with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. It uses a stretched version of the platform underpinning the Omoda 5 and the Omoda 7 and features double hydraulic suspension and an advanced brake-by-wire system.

Chinese media believe the car is based on the Omoda 7 due to the outline of elements such as the grille, and light clusters. From the side, the T1GC has an angular D-pillar, and there is also a very significant difference to the Omoda 7 with the door handles. These are now pop-out versus the semi-concealed ones on the Omoda 7.

The Omoda 7 features Chery’s Kunpeng PHEV system based around a  1.5 TGDi petrol engine with a maximum power of 115 kW and peak torque of 220 Nm. This gives the car an electric range of 95 km and a combined range of 1250 km. Chinese media speculate that the T1GC will use a new version of the Kunpeng system based around a naturally aspirated 1.5 liter engine. This would likely help boost range and help Chery compete with BYD’s DM 5.0 equipped models and the forthcoming second-generation Thor PHEV system from Geely.

The new car will likely go on sale in the first half of 2025. Currently, it seems that it will look similar to the Omoda 7, although it will be rebranded for the Chinese market.

It is unclear whether the interior will also be similar. The interior of the Omoda 7 is similar to that seen in Fulwin range cars. There is a 2.5k 1000 nit brightness 15.6-inch infotainment screen that can slide over to the passenger side. In addition to voice control, the car functions can also be controlled by gestures.

Omoda was originally the name of a Chery model but has since become an export brand. The name was first used in Russia and other former Soviet markets before expanding coverage. The first model was the Omoda 5, and the Omoda 7 follows on from this.
